“Itzimná” or “God of Creation” in Maya. It was a small town outside the center in Colonial times. Over the years it became a colony of the Santa Ana neighborhood and is currently considered one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Mérida.

Around the parish, gardens were installed called Los Recreos de Itzimná, to which the tramway line that reached the place well into the 20th century led. The current Itziná park that surrounds the parish was completed in 1972 and is surrounded by old country-style mansions, now worn out by time, but still representative of past greatness.

There are about 570 establishments operating in Itzimná, which together employ around 753, and most of these establishments are dedicated to retail.
The Itziná neighborhood is a town in the municipality of Mérida, in Yucatán, and covers an area close to 130 hectares.

Population
Some 2,770 people live in 905 houses in Itziná. There are 214 people per km2, with an average age of 35 years and an average schooling of 12 years.

Before the conquest of Yucatán, Itzimná was a small ceremonial town where the god Itzamná was worshiped, close (to the north) of the settlements that made up T'Hó, the ancient Mayan city on which the conquerors settled the current city of Mérida. Izamal is considered to be the main seat of the cult of Itzamná, but the Itzamná ceremonial center, which has been conurbated with Mérida since the 18th century and one of its current neighborhoods, is named after the Mayan heavenly god.

The original inhabitants of Itzimná belonged to the kuchkabal (chiefdom) of Ceh Pech and were governed by Itzam Pech. The encyclopedia Yucatán en el Tiempo says:
“Around 1549 (seven years after the city of Mérida was founded on the town of Tho), the chiefdom of Ceh Pech was inhabited by 180 people, many of whom moved to Chuburná upon the arrival of the Spaniards, who destroyed idols and worship and instead built the temple where the Christ of Esquipulas was worshiped, which was dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel...”

"Itzimná" o "Dios de la Creación" en Maya. Fue un pequeño pueblo a las afueras del centro en la época Colonial. Con el paso de los años quedó como una colonia del barrio de Santa Ana y actualmente es considerado uno de los barrios más bellos de Mérida.

En los alrededores de la parroquia se instalaron unos jardines que se llamaron Los Recreos de Itzimná hasta donde conducía la línea de tranvías que llegaba al lugar bien entrado el siglo XX. El actual parque de Itzimná que rodea a la parroquia se terminó de construir en 1972 y está rodeado de viejas mansiones de tipo campestre, hoy desgastadas por el tiempo, pero aún representativas de pasadas grandezas.

Antes de la conquista de Yucatán, Itzimná fue una pequeña localidad ceremonial en la que se veneró al dios Itzamná, cercana (al norte) de los asentamientos que integraban T'Hó, la antigua ciudad maya sobre la cual los conquistadores asentaron la actual ciudad de Mérida. Izamal es considerada como la sede principal del culto a Itzamná, pero el centro ceremonial Itzimná, conurbado con Mérida desde el siglo XVIII y uno de sus barrios actuales, usa el nombre del dios celestial maya.

Los habitantes originales de Itzimná pertenecieron al kuchkabal (cacicazgo) de Ceh Pech y eran gobernados por Itzam Pech. Dice la enciclopedia Yucatán en el Tiempo:
“Hacia 1549 (siete años después de fundada la ciudad de Mérida sobre el poblado de Tho), el cacicazgo de Ceh Pech estaba habitado por 180 personas, muchas de ellas se trasladaron a Chuburná a la llegada de los españoles, quienes destruyeron los ídolos y el adoratorio y en su lugar edificaron el templo donde se veneró al Cristo de las Esquipulas, que estuvo dedicado a San Miguel Arcángel....”
